How can you best support authors?
Hello my darlings!
Sometimes readers ask me where the best place to buy books is.
My answer?
Wherever is best for YOU!
Authors sell in a lot of places for a lot of different reasons. Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Apple, and Kobo make it easy for us to reach new audiences and people who aren't familiar with is. Indie bookstores provide great spaces where we can easily connect with readers who like to shop local. Of course, shopping directly from authors at vendor events or through our websites is great, too.
My personal favorite way for readers to shop is directly from me, especially with digital copies. When you buy a book from my Payhip store or my website, you OWN the book. When you “buy” from major online digital retailers, you're just buying a license. (In other words, those retailers can cancel that license or delete the book at any time!)
Also, those websites do take a chunk of royalties. When you buy from me directly, I'm able to charge the same or less as major retailers but keep a larger percentage of what you're paying! (And with one kid in college and three cats to feed, your girl loves those higher royalties!)
That said, I will always support one thing above all: reading.
I want you to love to read, I want you to love my stories, and I want you to have access to the books you want!
So, a few things to keep in mind, especially since I know times are tough for all of us:
I have a lot of free eBooks, especially first-in-series.
Your local library might carry my books! If they don't, please ask your librarians to order the books for you!
Sometimes, you can find my books on used book websites or at discount book stores. Buy used! I don't care!
When you visit me at an in-person book event, I often bundle books to sell at a discounted rate, especially if I have any paperbacks with slight cover damage.
If you have a friend who owns my books, borrow them! Trade them! Share them!
